Webinar Description:
In recent years there has been a resurgence of activism on college campuses around various social issues, thus increasing student-athletes’ efforts to utilize the visibility of their sport to bring attention to important societal issues. This unique climate of student activism and civic engagement provides athletic and campus staff and administrators with the opportunity to enhance the learning and development of student-athletes beyond the athletic realm. Through the examination of an instrumental case study exploring an educational leadership program designed to engage student-athletes around racial justice, session participants will discover how one athletic department’s unique approach helped to enhance student-athletes’ learning and development while better equipping them to utilize their athletic platform to make a meaningful societal impact. This session should particularly benefit participants who are interested in the intersection of athletics, social justice, and the holistic learning and development of student-athletes.
