SUMMARY:The Color of Modernism: Paints\, Pigments and the Transformation of Modern Architecture in 1920s Germany
DESCRIPTION:Friday November 05 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm EST. \nRegistration for Zoom: http://bit.ly/3DtZWQe \nOne of the most enduring and pervasive myths about early modernism is that it was white. This was never true anywhere in Europe\, least of all in Germany where Bruno Taut published his famous “Call to Coloured Architecture” in 1919 before leading a motley effort to invent new ways of using color in architecture and urban design. This talk\, based on a new book with the eponymous title\, will dismantle the myth of whiteness by examining five different theoretical interpretations of the scientific and artistic color theory advanced by members of the German avant-garde. Often working closely with contemporary artists\, 1920s architects in Germany developed an astonishing breadth of approaches that ranged from using color as a surface ornament to color as a space-making agent to color as the agent of emotional charge to color as the quality that could dissolve the surface of a wall to make physical enclosure and architecture abstract entities. Thus\, color was integral to the spatial quality of design\, not applied as an afterthought\, and a key aspect of the work of many avant-garde architects developing new aesthetic systems. \nDeborah Ascher Barnstone is Professor of Architecture and Head of School at the University of Technology Sydney. A graduate of Barnard College\, Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture\, Planning\, and Preservation\, and the Delft University of Technology\, she is both a practicing licensed architect and an architectural historian. Barnstone’s primary research interests are in interrogating the origins of modernism and exploring the relationships between art\, architecture\, and culture more broadly. Her monographs include The Break with the Past: German Avant-garde Architecture\, 1910-1925 (Routledge: 2018)\, Beyond the Bauhaus: Cultural Modernity in Weimar Breslau\, 1918-1933 (University of Michigan Press: 2016)\, and The Color of Modernism: Paints\, Pigments and the Transformation of Modern Architecture in 1920s Germany (Bloomsbury 2021). Recent publications include articles in the Journal of Architecture\, Journal of Design History\, and New German Critique.

SUMMARY:Creative (Climate) Communications: Productive Pathways for Science\, Policy and Society
DESCRIPTION:  \nRutgers Department of Human Ecology \n Rutgers Climate Institute \nJoint Seminar \nVirtual and In-person* \n\nCreative (Climate) Communications: \nProductive Pathways for Science\, Policy\, and Society \n  \nFriday\, November 12\, 2021 \n11:30 am – 12:30 pm \n \n  \nMax Boykoff\, University of Colorado-Boulder \n\nAbstract: Conversations about climate change at the science-policy interface and in our lives have been stuck. In this presentation\, Boykoff will highlight some dimensions of his recent book ‘Creative (Climate) Communications’ that integrates lessons from the social sciences and humanities to more effectively make connections through issues\, people\, and things that everyday citizens care about. This has worked to enhance our understanding that there is no ‘silver bullet’ to communications about climate change. It argues that a ‘silver buckshot’ approach is needed instead\, where strategies effectively reach different audiences in different contexts. Tactics emanating from this approach can then significantly improve efforts that seek meaningful\, substantive\, and sustained responses to contemporary climate challenges. Boykoff argues that it can also help to effectively re-capture a common or middle ground on climate change in the public arena. The presentation will highlight endeavors that harness creativity to try to better understand what kinds of communications work where\, when\, why\, and under what conditions in the twenty-first-century communication environment. \n\n* This seminar will be held in person on the Rutgers Cook Campus and virtually. A limited number of Rutgers faculty\, staff\, and students will be eligible to attend in person following Rutgers COVID protocols. All are welcome to attend virtually (including members of the public and those not affiliated with Rutgers). \n\n*Everyone must register to attend whether they will participate in person or virtually.  \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:GENERALIZED LINEAR AND ADDITIVE MIXED MODELING FOR LINGUISTS
DESCRIPTION:Please join Spanish and Portuguese GSA on Friday\, November 19 from 10 am to 2.30 pm for the online workshop “Generalized Linear and Additive Mixed Modeling for Linguists” led by Prof. Márton Sóskuthy from The University of British Columbia. In this workshop\, we will review GLMMs and will take our first steps in Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMM). GAMM is a great option to analyze non-linear data but still have interpretable results (the nightmare of us all!). It will have brief lecture sections followed by hands-on exercises. We will be using R and RStudio. Make sure you have the packages tidyverse\, lme4\, mgcv\, and itsadug up and running in advance. \nThe workshop will be completely online (https://rutgers.zoom.us/j/91001542002?pwd=YnJFcVFDRmtvNFpBazdkNFMrdWNlUT09) and there will be a 45-minute break at around noon. \nFor questions\, contact Laura at laura.fdeza@rutgers.edu. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
