Sports and Fitness at Rutgers

Recreation Centers (Gymnasiums)

There are a number of rec centers around the different New Brunswick campus. Large multi-purpose gyms with a fitness center are on Busch Campus (the Sony-Werblin Rec Center, often referred to as simply "Werblin"), the College Ave Campus (the College Avenue Gym), Livingston Campus (the Livingston Recreation Center)and on Cook Campus (the Cook/Douglass Recreation Center). Smaller fitness centers are also located below Rockoff Hall on Morris Street (the Tech Gym and Spa), below Easton Ave apartments (Rutgers Fitness Center). Loree Hall on Douglass Campus has space for recreation classes, and has a small bowling alley. There is also a Tennis Center on Busch campus.

There is a running track at University Park on Busch Campus (across from Sony Werblin). The rec centers provide many services, including personal training, nutrition councelling, massage & facials. Reservations can be made for any of the rec center spaces, indoors and out, picnic areas and equipment.

Recreation Classes

Rutgers recreation offers many classes during the semester, and a limited selected during the summer. You can find a pdf brochure online [here] which details the classes, and you can sign up either online, in person at a rec center office, or (in certain cases) by mail or phone. Classes include swim lessons, dance lessons, fitness workshops and passes, martial arts instruction, outdoor day trips, music lessons, personal development classes and many more. The selection changes from semester to semester.

Sports Teams and Clubs

Sports clubs are generally designed for those who want to learn to play a sport, and/or want to play it recreationally. Sports teams are competitive and require try-outs.

Outdoor Recreation

Hiking

There are many "trails" in New Jersey. Trail seems to be a general word used for anything from a short, completely flat, stroll on a path that allows wheel-chairs and strollers, to a day long hike in the back country. Check the length of the trail, and take a look at a topographic map when planning any hike. A common destination for day and half-day hikes is the Delaware Water Gap, on the border of new Jersey and Pennsylvania, about 1 hour and 20 minutes drive to the west of New Brunswick. This "Delaware" refers to the river, not the state.
