On-Campus Housing for Graduate Students
Students often prefer to stay on-campus, especially in their first couple of semesters at Rutgers. Living on-campus allows you to be in walking distance of your department/ lab, facilities such as the library, gym and student center. Each graduate housing unit is supervised by one or two graduate students who help organize events for their residents. Living on-campus is convenient for students who don't own cars and rely on the Rutgers buses and shuttles for transportation on and around campus.
Advantages of On-Campus Housing

- Cable and internet are provided
- All graduate students have private bedroom accommodations
- Easy access to on-campus facilities via free intercampus buses
- No maintenance costs
- All apartments are furnished
Options for On-Campus Housing
Single graduate students are housed in apartment style units in Camden, Newark and New Brunswick. On the New Brunswick campuses single graduate students may also choose to live in traditional residence halls.
- Busch Campus
- Buell Apartments: Four residents share an apartment. Each with a private bedroom, sharing a living room, kitchen, bath and dining room. Laundry facility located within the complex. Each apartment is furnished and carpeted. The living room usually has a sofa set, two side tables, one long coffee table. The dining room has a dining table with four chairs. Each bedroom has a study desk and chair, a chest of drawers, a built-in wall closet, a single bed and a bed-side table. Some rooms also have a bookshelf. All the buildings of his complex have a air-cooling and heating system.
- Johnson Apartments Private bedrooms to two students sharing a living room, dining area, bath and full kitchen. Each apartment is furnished and carpeted. Laundry facilities are in the basement of the building. Air-conditioners are not included but can be installed in each apartment.
- Livingston Campus
- The Quads: Have private furnished bedrooms and shared bathroom facilities. Each Quad has study rooms, kitchens, lounges, laundry facilities and a central multipurpose room. These buildings do not offer air conditioning.
- Douglass Campus (Female Only)
- Old Gibbons Houses: Have nine private furnished bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a kitchen and a common sitting room. A laundry room is withing walking distance. These buildings do not offer air-conditioning.
- Cook Campus:
- Starkey Apartments: Four students share a living room, bath, full kitchen and dining room while having private bedrooms. Each appartment is furnished and the buildings have an air-cooling system. A laundry room, post office and convenience store is located nearby.
Housing Contracts
Single graduate students may choose to contract for either of two rental periods:
Annual Contract: Allows occupancy in the same space for one full calender year.
Note:There is a considerable monetary adavatage to the Annual Contract plan.
Academic Contract :Allows occupancy from the beginning of the fall semester to the end of spring semester.
Graduate Family Housing
Family housing is available only to graduate students enrolled as fulltime matriculating students living with their spouses and/or their minor dependent children. Graduate Family Housing offers one and two bedroom appartments on Busch Campus. The rent includes all utilities, heating, cable television and internet charges.
Note: These appartments are unfurnished but are equipped with a refrigerator and stove.
