New Brunswick Night Life

The two main areas for going out are - Downtown New Brunswick (George St between Livingston and Rt 27, and a block or two either side) - Easton Avenue – along Easton Ave, from the Train station up to Ray Street.

Downtown New Brunswick has a mix of very expensive restaurants, mid-priced pubs and restaurants and cheap takeaway eateries. Easton Ave is mostly cheap take out and casual dining places and undergrad bars.

Bars & Pubs

The normal grad student night out is on Thursdays. During summer the gathering place is often at Evelyn’s on Easton Ave, since it has a great outdoor bar. During the school year Doll’s Place is the usual hang out on Thursday nights. Other bars popular among grad students are Old Bay, Tumulty’s, Clyde’s, Ale & Witch, Harvest Moon, Charlie Brown’s, the Court Tavern and Corner Tavern.

Cafes & Coffee Shops

Strangely for a university town there is a real dearth of coffee shops nearby. Those that do exist are:

  • The Red Lion: In the basement of the Rutgers Student Center on College Ave. They serve a range of very cheap snack foods and coffee. They have many televisions and a huge screen which typically show sports games, and a pool table. Seating options include chairs & tables, comfortable armchairs and sofas. It's not uncommon to see someone taking a nap
  • Au Bon Pain: Au Bon Pain (ask a French person for the correct pronunciation).
