Airports & Getting There and Back

The closest airports are:

  • Newark Liberty International Airport. a.k.a. EWR is located in Essex and Union Counties in New Jersey.
    • DRIVING: New Jersey Turnpike (Exits 13A and 14); U.S. Routes 1 & 9 and I-78. EWR is a 25-mile drive from campus and about 16 miles from midtown Manhattan.
    • TRAIN: The NJ-Transit trains connect NYC (New York Penn Station), Newark Liberty Airport and New Brunswick. It takes a little over 30 minutes to and from campus.
    • TAXI: Regular taxis cost around 60 dollars from campus to EWR.
  • John F. Kennedy International Airport a.k.a JFK is located in Jamaica, New York 11430. Telephone: (718) 244-4444
    • DRIVING: Don't.
    • TRAIN: From New Brunswick, take the NJ Transit train to New York Penn Station, transfer there to the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) train to Jamaica (purchase tickets from vending machines in Penn Station: $7.25 peak; $5.25 off-peak), get off at Jamaica and take the last bit on the JFK AIRTRAIN (another 5 dollars, which you only pay when you get OFF) to the terminal you fly from (a list of airliners and terminals is available on the tracks). Traveling from JFK to Brunswick by train entails the same journey in reverse.. Reserve two hours in total for the described journey by trains between New Brunswick and JFK. You could take a NYC subway instead of the LIRR; this would make the journey a couple dollars cheaper, but also much longer, less reliable, and more burdensome.
    • BUS: There's an airport bus service between the Port Authority bus terminal in New York and JFK. See the buses page and the NYC travel page for bus info to NYC.
  • LaGuardia. Located in the Borough of Queens, New York City, bordering on Flushing Bay and Bowery Bay. It is eight miles from Midtown Manhattan.

Flights

There are many companies on-line that compete to advertise the best discount fares in flight tickets. It is worthwhile taking a look at several of them when you plan your trip. Some of the most famous are: Kayak, Expedia, Orbitz, Hotwire, Cheaptickets, and Priceline. There are also websites with special offers for students, such as Student Universe and International Student Travel.

Names and websites of airline companies are available for example in this list at Yahoo!.
