About Parking on Campus
From Rutgers GSA Wiki
Rutgers has one of the largest campuses in the country. We have an excellent bus service connecting the campuses, yet many of us will eventually buy cars.
The US has several driving and parking rules which could be confusing for a new driver for International students. We also have our own Police who frequently make rounds of the campus day and night. While this is amazing for public safety, this means you have to be extra careful about driving and parking on campus. This page will give you a good overview of everything you need to know about parking at Rutgers.

Rutgers Parktran
The Rutgers Department of Parking and Transportation, located in the Public Safety Building on commercial Avenue, has all the information you need about parking in and getting around campus. You will find all you need to know about the Rutgers Bus service and schedule, paying tickets online, rideshare information and so on.
Parking Lots
There are several lots on campus with different restrictions and specific to commuters, faculty and staff (if you are a TA or GA, you are considered to be faculty) and visitors. Find all information you need about the parking lots on campus at the Parktran Parking website.
Parking Permits
Parking in restricted lots is legal only if you have specific parking permits. These permits can be picked up at the Public Safety Building, if you are eligible. Most graduate students, are TAs or GAs. TAs and GAs get an annual pass for about $20 and most lots are open for Faculty parking. Find more information at the Parking permits page.
Events Parking
Be prepared to have unexpected delays and absolutely no-where to park during special events, especially during the Rutgers Football Games in the Fall Semester. Nearly all lots on Busch and Livingston are closed for students during football games, but there will be adequate advance warnings about this via road signs. Note that during these times, the Rutgers buses run on a different schedule too. find more information at the Special Events Parking Website.
Parking Tickets
For information on the fine amounts for different parking violations on campus, visit the Parktran Parking Ticket page. You can also pay tickets online, if you do not wish to appeal the ticket. Remember that there is usually a fine for paying tickets late. It sucks, but it is inevitable and irreparable, so why delay paying it!
Other Useful Information
Key card for gated slots
There are some lots on campus which have faculty parking permissions, but there are other lots which are for faculty parking but require a key card to get through the gates barring the entry. These key cards are easy to get from the Public Safety Building for a nominal fee of around $5 and have no limitation on validity.
Parking Meters
There are several parking meters on campus, especially on College Avenue and downtown New Brunswick. Most parking meters accept 5 cent (Nickel), 10 cent (Dime) and 25 cent (Quarter) coins. One quarter gives you 15 minutes of parking time at most meters. Remember, you cannot insert coins, i.e. buy parking time for more than 2 hours.
Free parking
There is no (or very little) free parking on campus if you do not have any parking permits. However, many lots become open for the public after hours and on weekends. Parking meters (free on weekends and after 8:00 pm on weekdays) and many parking decks in downtown New Brunswick are free during these times.
