Resolution to support TAs at New York University
Introduced and Passed by the GSA Council on Sunday, November 13, 2005
Presented by: Kristen Gilmore, Scott Bruton, Carlos Diuk
On November 9, 2005, the TAs at NYU went on strike after the administration refused to re-negotiate their contract, which expired on August 31, 2005 and refuses to recognize their right to unionize.
The Graduate Student Association supports the TAs in their continued strike. Further, the GSA condemns the spirit of anti-union statements put forward by NYU’s administration. Graduate Employees who were planning to strike for recognition, a traditional union organizing strategy, were threatened with loss of financial support and other reprisals.
Graduate Employees at NYU are seeking to negotiate their working conditions through collective bargaining. TAs and GAs at Rutgers University have been represented by the faculty union since 1973 and continue to enjoy the benefits of collective bargaining.
We call on the New York University administration to recognize the right of Graduate Employees to unionize and to immediately resume contract negotiations in good faith with GSOC/Local 2110 UAW. |
